I’d forgotten all about loaded baked potatoes. I have some vegan sour cream and Daiya’s new pepperjack nondairy cheese shred in my fridge, maybe I’ll pick up some chives, brocolli and other veggies and make those this week. Thanks for the idea!

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

Did you make them! Were they as good as they sound?

  • Michelle

Our “to go” lunch is onigiri — rice balls! My little one loves rice and seaweed (well, the whole family does, for that matter!) and it makes such a delicious, easy to pack lunch. Traditional fillings include salted salmon but sometimes we use canned tuna or whatever we happen to have available in the house. Always a hit.

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

Okay, funny story — I started making those during my bento box phase, which
happened to be during the first trimester of my pregnancy with my youngest
daughter. Well, morning sickness hit hard right around that time, and now I
associate that feeling with onigiri, so I can’t bring myself to eat them –
      or make them — anymore!

I had a hard time picking between retro and modern, but those blues with that rug won it for me; I picked modern

  • Shris

I voted for Traditional, mostly because of the coffee tables shown. I would prefer the blues used in the other room, but the shaker-inspired tables and full size sofa did it for me.

I use it in the laundry and for carpet stains and to clean the bathroom

  • Mami2jcn

I use baking soda to get rid of odors in my refrigerator.  I also used it to scrub crayon marks off the wall, so it can be a great cleaner.

    mami2jcn at gmail dot com

  • Kelly

I add it to my regular facewash to exfoliate about once a week.

It also makes a great bathroom cleaner. I sprinkle some in the bathtub, add some dishwashing liquid and there’s no need for scrubbing.

  • Christine831

I use baking soda mixed into my shampoo to remove buildup in my hair.

  • Mindy

I LOVE baking soda!  It’s so versatile!  I use it in the laundry to remove smells, with vinegar as a cleaner, make a paste of it with water to act as a scrub for scrubbing the bathtub!

  • Amber

I use baking soda to clean the cooking grease spots from the ceramic burners of our gas stove.

  • Candace Fuller

I use vinegar and baking soda to clean every area of my house! It has replaced all of my traditional household cleaners. I love it!

  • Wanibug

I make a paste and use it on bee stings.  Also, my hubby gets heartburn and he puts a tsp of Baking Soda in a glass of water and uses it to settle his stomach.

  • tawnya

It’s replaced all chemical cleaners in my home.  We are straight baking soda / vinegar people!

(I also use it as toothpaste in a pinch!)

  • http://twitter.com/sarcoupon SMJ

I use it generously in laundry (particularly in stinky loads) and it does the trick.

  • Martie Hawkins

I use it in the laundry to help boost the cleaning. I use it in the sinks to help with the scrubbing power – also in my pans if there is anything baked/burned on because it softens the crud. I use it to put out fires on the stove and in the oven. (Hey! I’ve had to teach 4 daughters to cook here!) And I use it in the fridge/freezer.

  • Roso1946

My use of baking soda goes back many year ago. I used to cleaning stains, as a deodorizing, as antiacid, and the best one is to whitening my teeth.

  • http://marcijo.blogspot.com/ Marci @ Rancho Relaxo

I use baking soda to bake, to get rid of odors in my fridge & garbage, to scrub my stove & dishes and to wash my hair.

  • Jessica

I pour baking soda, ice and hot water into my garbage disposal and turn it on to clean it.

  • Carrie Kearney

I use it for cleaning… scrubbing my flat top oven and for washing my hair!  Also, I do pour BS and vinegar in my disposal if there is a funky smell.

  • http://twitter.com/granolacatholic Lisa Greenwood

I love baking soda, but my favorite uses are in the bathroom. I use Arm and Hammer Baking Soda to “wash” my hair and in my bath for soft skin. My dh uses instead of deodorant.

  • Shauna

Baking soda is one of my main cleaners around the house… getting out carpet stains, deodorizing the garbage disposal, cleaning the toilet, washing dishes (to get out coffee & hardwater stains), and my husband recently used it as an abrasive to remove plastic that had melted onto our toaster oven!

  • Angiechadwell

I sprinkle baking soda on my produce before washing it. It provides a corrosive texture that helps to wash off the waxes that the stores put onto some produce.

  • kelly p.

i use it to scrub the toilet.

  • http://impressyourkids.org lmilla

Cleaning: I sprinkle it on straight for food stuck on my stainless steel cookware…  Haircare: it’s totally the only cleanser I use for my hair – 1 Tbsp baking soda to 1 cup water and use it in place of shampoo!  My hair has never felt or acted better!

  • Julie

I use it as a replacement for any type of scouring product.  I also use it to deoderize the cat’s litterbox.

  • Susan

I exfoliate my face with Baking Soda.  I sprinkle a little bit on my face wash and then rub into my face.

  • Mamasimpson4

My favorite use is to clean the bathtub. I also use it on the carpet andof course in the kitchen.

  • http://www.morethanmundane.com Krissajeldy

I use it to make deodorant and also as an air freshener with some drops of essential oil added in.

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

I have also used it as a drain cleaner. Who knew?! =p

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1489702424 Susan Borcoman

I buy the big box because I use so much. I use it as part of my cleaning supplies for the whole house. I make my own deodorant (equal parts baking soda and cornstarch or arrowroot powder with a little extra virgin coconut oil and a couple of drops of lavender oil to make it smell nice) and veggie wash (1 cup each of water and vinegar with 2 TBSP. each baking soda and lemon juice). And I use it in baking, of course.

  • Danielle

I use baking soda for almost everything.  I use it for cleaning.  Removing stains from my lightly colored kitchen counter. Getting hardened food off my stove and pans.  Cleaning a stinky drain along with vinegar.  Cleaning out my dishwasher.  In my laundry.  To polish my silver tea set. I just read about using it in place of shampoo and plan to do that.  I always keep one in the fridge and freezer.  I bake/cook with it.  I’ve used it for teeth too.  Most importantly, I also use it in warm water to gargle with and my dr also recommend taking a baby medicine syringe and dropping some of the warm water solution in the nose during a cold to knock it out.  I used to live on sudafed as I got colds all the time, now I rarely get sick because the baking soda knocks out the bug before it get’s started.

  • sam

I use lots of baking soda – clean toilets, laundry, drains, rust stains, bee stings, baths for itchies, baking……

  • Anonymous

I use it to clean the sauce pans that I burn on occasion.

  • Selene montgomery

I use it as a drain cleaner with vinegar, a counter-stain scrubber, but my main use is in each laundry load to enhance the detergent – only use half the recommended amount of detergent

  • marycarol

I sprinkled it on a sofa I had gotten out of storage. Left it overnight then vacuumed it. Got the musty smell out!

  • Sarah Kurth

I use baking soda to bake, of course, but I also use it to scour the tile and sink! My most recent new use has been mixing it with some lavender essential oil, sprinkling it on the rug, then vacuuming it up–it deodorizes the floor really well with chemicals!

  • Victoria Harju

Well baking of course! I also use it to clean the toilets, clean my kitchen sink, as a drain opener, as a laundry booster and stain remover, to wash my hair, deodorize the litter box area, carpet deodorizer, keep my fridge and freezer fresh smelling, as a silver polisher. I buy the big box the uses are endless! The craziest thing I’ve used it for was when our dog got too close to a skunk when she was a puppy and I learned that equal parts baking soda, peroxide and baby shampoo worked amazingly on eliminating skunk odor so I always keep those ingredients handy in case she didn’t learn her lesson the first time!

  • Anonymous

I use baking soda to clean coffee maker

  • Cjabdelnour

I also use use it the clean my sink drain  along with vinegar and hot water. Works great!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sholland33 Shell Holland

I don’t really use baking soda but my mom uses it to clean hard to clean stains

  • Michelle O.

I love using baking soda to clean and neutralize any odors in the microwave, especially after I’ve used it for cooking bacon.  I put a teaspoon or two stirred in a cup of water in a Pyrex cup.  Microwave on high for 2 minutes, then easily wipe down the microwave.  Fresh and clean!
I also use hot water / baking soda solution to deodorize our stainless steel water bottles and clean coffee or tea stains.

  • Melissa Q

I use it to replace any kind of scouring powder.  It works great on counters, sinks, tubs, toilets.  AND it got the ink out of my kitchen table that nothing else seemed to work on.  I also use it (mixed with Cetaphil cleanser) as a facial scrub.  That’s how I got started using baking soda for  something other than baking :-)

  • Ursula Liao

I use baking soda for hair wash, produce wash, all-purpose cleaner and laundry soap. It’s amazing and I love it. When I first heard about using it for hair wash, I thought people were nuts! So I guess I’m a nut now. :)

    • Jenmose

does it take a while for your hair to “not be greasy” after starting this? Do you color your hair? If so, how does the color hold up to the baking soda wash?

  • navywife

I use lemon juice and baking soda to clean the bottom of my cooking pans.

  • Miranda

I use baking soda for baking and removing odors.

  • Karla

My favorite use for baking soda is model volcanoes! :-)

  • amber

I use baking soda mixed w/ vinegar as a drain cleaner, and have started to use that instead of expensive drain cleaners

  • Caroline

I use it to clean my stainless steel kitchen sink.

  • Pam

I have asthma so I try to avoid Comet or any kind of cleaners with bleach as the fumes will trigger an attack. I use baking soda instead, either as a scouring powder or mixed with a little all-natural dish soap to make a paste. I use it to clean sinks, bathtubs, toilets, pots and pans, etc. It removes the hard water film from my coffee carafe, tea and coffee stains from ceramic mugs, berry stains from kitchen counters. I pour it down the garbage disposal to deodorize it, sprinkle it on rugs before vacuuming to freshen, and also use it with vinegar to clear drains.

I have to stay out of stores too because it’s hard for me to avoid buying the ‘bargains.’  I am all for saving money but it’s better not to tempt yourself into ‘spending to save.’

    • http://www.liverenewed.com/ Emily @ Live Renewed

You are so right Audrey, you’re not really saving money, if you wouldn’t have bought the item in the first place!

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

I hate shopping. Hubby even does the grocery shopping. He gets better deals than I do too because he remembers the coupons…and the tote bags for the groceries. I’m just so overwhelmed when I get in there…esp with the crowds.

  • http://momforhim.blogspot.com MomForHim

I used it in the fridge and to clean sinks, as well as for baking!

  • http://happyhealthymama.com Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama

Ahhh thank you for this post.  I needed it.

  • http://corvidarium.blogspot.com/ wendy

I use it for scouring the bottom of my frying pans if they’ve gotten a little too dark.
It’s also great for scrubbing bathtubs, and taking the smells out of shoes.

  • http://www.northerncheapskate.com/ Christina@Northern Cheapskate

Excellent advice!  I would also be careful when blogging about your home and family, too.  I once stumbled across a blog where I found a picture of adorable little girls standing in front of a sign with their street address on it.  Too scary to imagine what could happen if the wrong person saw that.

    • http://blog.michellemista.com/ Michelle Mista

Excellent point about personal blogging! I think as parents, many of us can’t help but share our families with the world but sharing too much is really risky.

  • http://nicoleslifeafter20.blogspot.com/ Nicole

I am so, so careful about oversharing  on the internet. When I lived alone, I never posted pictures of the outside of my house or anything else that would show where I lived. I also never check in to places on Facebook. It fells like I’m saying, “I’m over here, come steal my purse!” I think in our internet day and age, we just can’t be too careful! Thanks for the reminders!

What is the app in the photo? With the toddler playing with the bunny puzzle?

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life…Your Way

It’s called Shape Puzzle. That is her very favorite app!

  • rose

This is a great list of apps! My kids love a lot of apps
that are on this list like Monkey Preschool Lunchbox. Another really good app
for the kids when we are traveling is the Dish Remote Access app. With the
Sling Adapter hooked up to my receiver I can access all my subscription
channels and watch live TV from anywhere I can get a 3G or Wi-Fi connections. They
stay quiet the whole way with this app. Not only can we watch TV, but I can set
up recordings through the app as well. A co-worker at Dish told me I could also
access our Blockbuster@Home service through the app, which gives us more movies
on the road. This app is amazing when we are traveling because the kids can
watch all their favorite shows live on the road and I can use it when I am
working out. It is a great app for the whole family.

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

If he didn’t, we wouldn’t eat. =p I also hate shopping for clothes too…if only every day could be pajama day…

  • http://blog.michellemista.com/ Michelle Mista

Whoa, that’s scary! I hope things get resolved quickly and safely for you.

Your story also highlights some things that can go very wrong. So many sites and devices can interconnect with Facebook. When one is compromised, you risk compromising others as well.
