I am so excited to share these printable room planners with you today!

But first, I have to tell you that most of the credit goes to my amazing husband because I would have given up long before finishing these printables if it wasn’t for his help. He’s the real decorator, designer and Photoshop expert in the family, and this project proved it once again.

A family friend first introduced us to the idea of using a room planner years ago when she told us how she would cut out shapes to represent her furniture and practice moving them around a representative room she’d drawn to scale. Then, as we began building our home 3.5 years ago, we fell in love with Ikea’s kitchen planner, which allowed us to plan our kitchen in detail and choose the fixtures we needed to make everything fit perfectly.

This printable room planner gives you the ability to plan out your room configurations before you start dragging heavy furniture around.

To start, simply measure the size of your room and draw the outline onto the printable room grid.

If you have standard size furniture, you can then cut out our pre-formatted furniture (bedroom & accent furniture or dining & living room furniture) to use in your room.

If you need additional furniture or sizes, we’ve also included an extra furniture grid that you can use to cut out additional furniture in whatever shape or size you need.

Click here to view each individual printable or download all four in a single file.

How often do you redecorate or move furniture around?

This is so incredibly helpful.. We’re just about to start redecorating our small rental apartment and this would be perfect. I hate dragging furniture from one end to the other only to discover it isn’t looking all that great:-)

I have to laugh because I’ve been doing just this since I was a teeneager. I’d constantly rearrange my bedroom and would lay it all out to scale like this before I moved anything. I have a master plan of my house and every piece of furniture even now. Covering the floor plan with contact paper so you can write on it with a whiteboard marker is handy.
A good tip is to measure and draw up furniture with the drawers and door open so you know that you will actually be able to use the piece when you move it.

Love the tip about drawing furniture with open doors and windows. It sounds like you’ve got a great system down!

This makes me so excited! Just like Jhhoffman, I have been playing with room layouts since I was in high school. There is something about rearranging furniture to create an entirely new space that my brain just LOVES! These printables will save me a lot of work.

Definitely come back and share any suggestions you have for improving them! Thanks, Catherine!

Was the fourth page like the first and just a grid or did I mess-up the download? I was also hoping for grid pieces for a piano, floor lamps, corner cabinets, and china/buffet tables. I’m going to try and make my own not to sure how they will come out but this will help get me started.

The fourth page is a grid with more lines (every 6″ instead of every foot)
to allow you to cut out your own furniture as well.

      Thanks so much!

Welcome, Nona! I had an iPhone when it first came out and I miss it greatly. I switched to Verizon to join my husbands plan, thinking I would save money but the cost turned out to be the same. I’m waiting for them to carry the iPhone. Rumor has it they will be offering it after January. If the rumor is true, it will be perfect timing, since I will be due for a free or discounted phone by then. I still use my old iPhone for music and a few other apps that don’t require connection to the internet. Thanks for the app suggestions.

Thank you very much! A couple of years ago I did up a scaled version of our old house… in fact the whole thing was done so I could use it for any house we would ever own or live in (military family.) Well my worst nightmare happened… my computer died and our hard drive that I back up to on a regular basis was corrupted. (it brought me to tears!) Thankfully some data was recovered but alas not this particular file (we only had dial-up in our area which was beyond SLOW… meaning no downloads available.) So now I have something to use for our NEW house (this move was 4000 miles) and the addition we are about to add! Thanks!!

been doing this for years too, tip for: don’t forget o mark on the room grid where the power sockets and fixed switches are (lights, air cond., etc). It’s also a good idea to consider heights of furniture but that takes some of the fun out of it :)

Thanks, Justin — great point about the sockets and switches!
