There are quite a few theories on how to extend the life of cut flowers. The key is to both prevent the growth of bacteria and provide nourishment for the flowers.
To start, cut your flowers underwater, at a 45-degree angle, about 2-3 inches above the previous cut. You’ll also need to remove any leaves that will be underwater in your vase. Many people recommend cutting the stems and giving the flowers fresh water every few days, but I’ll admit I rarely do that!
In my experience, the packets of flower food that come with many cut bouquets outperform other methods, but if you’re cutting your own flowers or don’t have any commercial flower food, try one of these methods:
1. Add 1/4 teaspoon of bleach to a quart of water.
2. Drop a copper penny in the water.
3. Mix 1/4 cup of clear soda with a quart of water.
4. Add 2-3 tablespoons each of vinegar and sugar to a quart water.
I love having fresh flowers in our home, especially this time of year, and keeping them looking great longer is definitely good for the wallet!
